What makes general dentistry holistic?

The dentistry is the same high standard you would expect anywhere. The difference is what we look at and what we use.

We look at the whole person. A cracked tooth prompts a question about clenching, which prompts a question about sleep and stress. A patch of decay prompts a conversation about diet and saliva. Bleeding gums prompt a look at general health and breathing, because gum inflammation is linked to cardiovascular risk [3]. Our comprehensive examination is unhurried for that reason.

We choose materials carefully. SHDC has been mercury-free since 1987. Fillings are composite or ceramic, crowns are ceramic or zirconia, and where the bite allows we avoid metal altogether. If you have a history of reacting to materials, biocompatibility testing is available.

We aim for the least treatment that solves the problem. Natural tooth is the best filling material, so we remove as little as possible and use bonded restorations that reinforce what remains.

Overview

1

One in three Australian adults has untreated tooth decay and three in ten have moderate or severe gum disease, most without symptoms; regular examinations catch both early [1][2].

2

Every new patient examination at SHDC includes an oral cancer screen, jaw joint and gum assessment, low-radiation digital x-rays and photographs.

3

We restore teeth with composite resin and ceramic (many made in-house with CEREC in one visit), never amalgam.

4

Anxious patients can choose from a calm approach, nitrous oxide or intravenous sedation.

5

Same-day emergency appointments are available for pain, swelling, broken teeth and knocked-out teeth.

"Holistic dentistry relates your oral health to the general health and vice versa. To do that we do all aspects of general dentistry and we utilise allied health practitioners in order to cover the areas that we can't cover with you here."

Assessment of jaw joints, teeth, existing restorations and the gum and bone support around each tooth

Digital x-rays (bitewings and panoramic) using up to 90 percent less radiation than film

6

A discussion of your concerns, the options and the costs

Anxious about the dentist?

You are in good company. Our team sees dental anxiety every day and plans around it: a calm, unhurried approach, topical numbing and warmed local anaesthetic, a television in the ceiling with headphones, rubber dam so nothing falls to the back of your throat, nitrous oxide in every treatment room, and intravenous sedation for patients who would rather remember nothing. Tell us before your appointment and we will plan the visit with you. Read more →

Emergency dentistry in the Sydney CBD

Toothache, a swollen face, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost crown or bleeding after an extraction all need prompt attention. Call (02) 9221 5800 as early as possible and we will fit you in the same day where we can. For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly in milk or saline, put it back in the socket if possible, and come straight in. Emergency dental →

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have a check-up?

Every six months for most people. Your dentist and oral health therapist set the interval by your decay and gum risk; some patients do well at twelve months, others need three or four.

Do you use amalgam fillings?

No. SHDC has been mercury-free since 1987. We use composite resin and ceramic restorations, and we remove old amalgam with the SMART protocol. See mercury-free dentistry.

Can I have a crown or ceramic filling in one visit?

Often, yes. CEREC technology lets us design and mill ceramic inlays, onlays and many crowns in-house while you wait.

Do you offer sleep dentistry?

Yes. Intravenous sedation is available for very anxious patients and for longer procedures, alongside nitrous oxide in every room.

Are you a family dentist?

Yes. We see children from their first teeth through to adults of every age, with oral health therapists trained in children's dentistry.

Do you accept health fund rebates?

Yes. We provide item numbers for extras cover claims and give you a written treatment plan with costs before treatment begins. Confirm your rebate with your fund, as policies vary.
